Medical1 in 6 US Children have Developmental Disabilities
Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder led the seventeen percent of increased developmental activities among young American according to a study. According to the study of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of these disorders rose to 15 percent of U.S. children from 12.8 percent or 8 million in 1997 to 1999, now to 15 percent or 10 million in 2006 to 2008. Autism is a lifelong condition which is caused by abnormal brain development. This condition tops the survey to have the largest increase to nearly four times. From 0.19 percent in 1997 - 1999, the study states that in 2006 - 2008, 0.74 percent of US kid is autistic. Autism hinders a person's ability to learn, communicate, and interact. Autism have different levels of severity and sysmptoms. Some of the most common traits of an autistic child is the difficulty in making eye contact, inability to understand or interpret facial expressions, and following and sharing instructions. They may also show strong interest on things and have compulsive behaviors. The same study states that the number children with ADHD increase to 7.6 percent from 5.7 percent. The researchers point out the number of ADHD was responsible for the higher overall incidence of developmental disabilities in the country. According to researchers, the increase of the case could have been caused by preterm births and the old age of parents by having their children. The numbers also increased due to better screening, diagnosis and awareness on such conditions which says that one in six children in the country have a developmental disability. The increased numbers will likely increase the demand health care and education services in the future. The data were taken from the 1997 to 2008 National Health Interview Survey comprises the conditions of children 3 to 17 years of age. Households and parents were asked to report diagnoses of any developmental disabilities like ADHD, metal retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, seizures, speech problems, hearing loss, blindness, learning disorders or any other developmental delays. On the good side, the number of children with hearing loss declined to 31 percent. Young boys were more likely to have developmental disabilities that young girls. Families with lower income and those that rely on public health insurance are likely to have children with such conditions.
