The results seemed promising but doctors warm that any extreme diet like those above should only be under the supervision a physician. More research is needed to prove if the reversal of diabetes will remain in the long term.

Another study presented in the last American Diabetes Association in San Diego, California, revolved about the possibility of a vaccine.

The paper was led by Jay Skyler of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. It was about an experimental vaccine that aimed to prevent the progression of Type 1 diabetes. Unfortunately, the said vaccines failed a the second step of the 3-phase trial process.

The vaccine is said to protect the insulin-producing beta cells the body's pancreas from the immune system. The formula is based on a an enzyme called glutamic acid decarboxylase of GAD.

The over sensitive immune system targets GAD and in turn, precious beta cells were also destroyed. The vaccine's aim is to teach the T cells of the immune system to tolerate the enzyme.

The vaccine trial was carried out on 145 patient from which are between 3 to 45 years of ages living in the United States of America and Canada which are all been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes within the previous three months. All of the volunteers were given with either the vaccine alone, the vaccine plus a standard immune-system booster, or just the booster alone. All of the patients in the three groups had their disease progressed similarly and with no difference among them in terms of side effects.

The failure of the vaccine will not go to waste as the researchers wants to study the possibility if the formula could still be used when administered sooner or as a part of a combination therapy.

Diabetes is now affecting almost 350 million, according to the date reported earlier at the conference. These figures has doubled since 1980. The disease kill around 3 million people around the world each year. It is caused by poor blood sugar control in the body which can lead to some heart diseases, stroke, damages to the kidneys, nerves, and eyes.
