Bloating or Other Gastrointestinal Problems Avoid upset stomach by consuming a smaller amount of spicy foods and citrus. Maintain intestinal gas to a minimum by drinking water or juice instead of carbonated beverages. Eat extra servings of cooked vegetables, nuts, and peeled fruits to prevent constipation. Also avoid eating late at night which can give you a good dose of heartburn or indigestion. It is best to travel with antacids. Over-the-counter activated charcoal pills are also ideal for decreasing gas if you consume too many beans or get “jet bloat” from pressure changes on the airplane. These pressure changes are somewhat mild, but are strong enough to inflate everything in your stomach and intestines. For constipation, take a mild laxative, drink plenty of fluids, and nibble on high-fiber foods such as pecans and almonds. Montezuma’s Revenge Montezuma's revenge is the colloquial term for any cases of traveler's diarrhea. As much as possible, avoid unsterilized local water. Some people are not used to waterborne bacteria in other countries so it is best to drink only sealed bottled water and use it to brush your teeth. Steer clear of raw vegetables, especially green leafy ones that may have been washed using affected water, and peel raw fruit. You can use tap water (the hottest water you can stand) to wash your hands and always remember to use soap to kill any bacteria. Avoid biting your nails to lessen risk of contamination. A travel-size pack of medication for diarrhea will most likely be enough to help cure you from this illness. Also, drink lots of bottled or boiled water to prevent dehydration. Deep-Vein Thrombosis Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot in a vein that is deep inside a part of the body, usually the legs. If you detect swelling, ache, or strange redness in one leg and you feel short of breath, head to the nearest hospital. Treatment frequently includes intravenous or oral doses of blood thinners. Although rare, DVT takes place when dangerous blood clots build up in your legs or pelvis which is usually caused by sitting in tight quarters. It is recommended that you stretch your legs during long flights. Try getting up every two hours to stretch or walk to the bathroom. You can also flex and bend your knees and rotate your ankles several times to increase blood circulation. Consult your doctor about preventive drugs if you’re more likely to have blood clots.
