Airborne irritants can worsen respiratory conditions characterized by chronic cough or wheezing or even cause asthma attacks. Here are a few irritants that can trigger asthma attacks and cause lung problems, and some of which are commonly found in your home. Laser printers and photocopiers produce ultrafine particles that may aggravate respiratory conditions. There has been a case where a woman experienced asthma and allergy symptoms for a few minutes every time she started making photocopies. Other types of printers are also unsafe for our respiratory system. There was also a woman whose work is selling lottery tickets in a small kiosk. She started to cough and wheeze at work, and her doctors concluded that the ink applied in the ticket printer was making her ill. The respiratory signs only disappeared when she changed jobs. Nitrogen dioxide is an odorless gas that can cause irritation to your eyes, nose, and throat. It can be found from appliances that burn fuels such as gas, kerosene, and wood. There have been studies that connected this gas to asthma symptoms in children. A research found that over a hundred children who lived in homes with higher levels of nitrogen dioxide experienced recurrent wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. It has been found that this gas can worsen asthma even in fairly small amounts produced by gas stoves, fireplaces, and heaters. Although you can avoid this by use of proper ventilation that can help lessen unsafe levels of nitrogen dioxide in your home. Fireworks are also culprits of asthma attacks. When lit, these fireworks release various chemicals, such as sulfur dioxide, which can worsen asthma when breathed in intense amounts. Even firework displays can potentially intensify asthma attacks.
