MedicalObesity and Jobs
Obesity is on the high and continues to rise as you read these. Though most expert points diet as the main culprit behind the alarming condition, Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) tells a different story. according to a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the agency, the type of work with its respective physical activity might have been a great contributor on the rise of number of obese. Only around 6.5 percent of American adults gets enough physical activity while they are at work. Another report from the PLoS One journal suggest that epidemic obesity cases in the country could be accounted for the steady rise of sedentary jobs. Researcher from Pennington Biomedical Research Center looked at the level of physical activity in U.S. jobs since 1960. They found out that for both men and women, the energy burned at work has dropped by more than 100 calories over five decades. The study was it first of it’s kind that measured and compared actual caloric figures on declining physical jobs and the rising nine to five sedentary office shifts in front of a desk. The report states that five decades ago, about half of the jobs in the private sector in the country required at least moderate intensity physical activity. These days, the number of jobs that require that same amount of energy is lower that 20 percent. While physical jobs decrease, the number of sedentary jobs increase. In the 60’s, there are people working in manufacturing, mining, logging, agriculture, which back then make 30 percent of the private sector jobs and now accounts to 12 percent of the jobs. Service jobs that promotes a sedentary lifestyle like various professional services, health and education, leisure and hospitality have increased it numbers to more that double. Most American adults spends their biggest chunk of their awaken state at work, and the likelihood of seeing a cultural shift toward a more physically demanding types of the jobs is slim. The study suggest that it is crucial to encourage everyone to a physical activity during their free time, or think of creative ways to get you moving even when you on you sedentary workplace.
