If Bill Gates want to get rid of Polio for good, the results of the recent World Health Assembly in Geneva closes to a resolution that will aim to eradicate one of the world's most debilitating diseases like Polio: guinea worm. This parasite organism is waterborne and could cause Dracunculiasis, a disease which only remains in four countries like Mali, Sudan, Ghana and Ethiopia. If the World Health Organization (WHO) will be successful in eradicating guinea worm, it would the second disease that was wiped out by mankind, that is if they surpass Bill Gates' Polio initiative. Smallpox was the very first disease that was completely eradicated in the 70's and now only a few lab stocks remains of the organism. Guinea worm is an intrusive disease that lives in stagnant and other unsafe water sources. The parasite enters the body when a person drinks contaminated water. Inside the body, it can grow up to three feet long. It thrives below the human skin and most of the crippling it human host. The are no medicines found yet to treat the guinea worm infection, nor any vaccines to prevent it. The only remedy is to slowly and painfully extract the worn from the skin which could take days to months. The worm could also be surgically extracted even before skin ulcer wounds occur. This disease itself is usually fatal by itself but it develop a secondary infection called septicaemia. Untreated guinea worm could lead to amputation of affected part, disabling its victim and prevent them from doing ordinary things that they used to do like attending school going to work. Although guinea worm has no know cure, preventing it is as simple as having a clean water supply. This is why the disease in endemic in the four countries. Ethiopia and Sudan fall behind the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target on having a clean drinking water. Ghana has already achieved the goal and Mali is on track and due to do so by 2015. The problem with this two country is that the poorest community don’t have access to such clean water. They are suffering not just with guinea worm but also with water - related diseases like cholera, typhoid, etc. You can talk about...
