WHO wants to Eradicate Guinea Worm with Clean Water (part 2)

Thank author of this post/comment

If the world is really serious in complete eradication of guinea worm, we should put our efforts in improving access to safe drinking water and make sure that even the poorest of poor or the most vulnerable sectors are provided. This will ensure the erasure of such diseases while giving them no chance or return.

Political will is also needed. There must be a cooperation between water organizations and health sectors, especially in many developing countries. Providing water to the masses is often left out to water utilities that usually don’t check the quality of their product to optimum health standards. Checking the safeness of the water supply is often left out to the health departments or ministries. The weak connection between these organizations is the crucial link or having safe and clean water.

The World Health Organization states that around 10 percent of the diseases on the planet could be prevented with safe water, sanitation and hygiene. These are the basic necessities that could prevent child mortality such as diarrhoea, that alone kills more people than AIDS, malaria and measles all combined together. Even patients of almost of the hospitals in the developing world further suffers from sanitation and other water-related diseases, adding the burden to limited resources of such health systems.

This is the first time in the history of the World Health Organization’s decision making body to consider three resolution relating to water, sanitation, and basic foundations for a healthy living. The fact that these resolutions are being considered would seem to indicate that their centrality to addressing global health issues is becoming more widely recognized within the health sector.

World Health Organization has still a long way to go with almost one billion people in world has no access to safe drinking water and some 2.6 billion people with no access to basic sanitation. The successful eradication or guinea worm is one big first step.
