MedicalRevolutionary Viral Treatment (Part 2)
But some viruses have developed to block this reaction. The researchers had an idea to combine these proteins with another protein that induce cells to destroy themselves, a process which is called apoptosis. They've formulated a medication for generic viruses which named DRACO, short for Double-stranded RNA Activated Caspase Oligomerizers. DRACO sticks its one end to dsRNA while it's other end initiates apoptosis and kill the infected cell and stop the virus from further replicating itself. It also has a delivery tag from naturally occurring proteins which gives it the ability to go through cell membranes of human and animal cell. If no dsRNA is present in a cell, it will not signal the cell to commit suicide. Professor of microbiology and immunology from Stanford University think the viruses will have a difficulty in finding a simple path to resist the medication though they're notorious at developing resistance to every drug they've been up to. It was tested to human and animal cell cultures in the lab. Researchers also tried the newly developed drug on animals. Mice that are infected with the H1N1 influenza were given DRACO and was completely cured, leaving no trace of the infection. The medication also didn't have no toxic effect on the animals. Researchers think that this could be the possible solution to thwart new virus outbreaks like SARS and AH1N1. Currently, it is being tested to mice and other viruses which authors are getting positive results. They hope to have the technology be licensed so it could be tested to larger animals, and in humans eventually. You can talk about...
